LG Launches First Android Smartphone LG-GW620

LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, reinforced its aggressive strategy in smartphones by announcing the first Android mobile device which will give LG a broader and more dominant position in this expanding market.

The announcement of LG’s first Android-powered smartphones comes only a week after the world’s third largest mobile phone company announced that it would be introducing three new Windows Mobile smartphones in the next few weeks. These developments underscore LG’s commitment to offering greater consumer choice in the expanding smartphone category.

The new LG-GW620 features a 3-inch full touchscreen and slide out QWERTY keypad to meet the growing needs of consumers who rely on their mobile phones for more than just making calls. The LG-GW620 benefits from an operating system that was created from the ground up to take advantage of the many mobile applications and services developed by search leader Google.

In anticipation of strong demand for smartphones that support social networking functions right out-of-the-box, the LG-GW620 also lives up to LG’s consumer-friendly design philosophy by making the smartphone experience more accessible for typical users. At the same time, LG’s messaging phones have traditionally been very popular with young professionals who demand a full QWERTY keypad for a fast mobile computing experience. The LG-GW620 manages to meet the needs of both types of users simultaneously.

“The LG-GW620 will appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today’s consumers. This Android phone is just one of many smartphone models we plan to introduce worldwide in the years ahead.”

In addition to the Android model, LG announced in early September that it will be introducing a minimum of 13 new smartphones over the next 16 months that utilize Microsoft’s Windows Mobile. The newest release, version 6.5, was announced just last week.

The LG-GW620 will be available in the fourth quarter of this year in select European markets.

The three devices will kick off LG’s most aggressive smartphone strategy to date, which will ultimately result in a total of 13 new LG-branded Windows® phones launched globally before the end of 2010.

The three latest additions to LG’s expanding smartphone line-up and the first to include the new Windows Mobile® 6.5 operating system include a full touchscreen device, a touch slider with QWERTY keyboard and a QWERTY bar-type handset. The three phones will be aimed at different segments of the market ranging from premium to affordable smartphones. The phones will be introduced initially for early adopter customers in Europe, the United States and Asia before being made available globally.

Designed with usability in mind, LG’s latest smartphone offerings will highlight the touch-friendly, easy-to-navigate interface of Windows Mobile 6.5 which delivers an easier and faster smartphone experience for users. These Windows® phones will be supported by LG’s own distinctive S-Class User Interface, which offers a unique 3D experience that works with Microsoft’s familiar operating system.

“This initial launch is a strong testament that LG is committed to offering a spectrum of choices for our broad range of customers,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our work with Microsoft on mobile devices reflects our strategy of offering the best in both hardware and software in all our smartphones.”

The latest version of Windows Mobile includes an upgraded Internet Explorer Mobile browser with a new engine and a customized version of Adobe Flash Lite for accessing sites previously unable to render properly on a handheld. Windows Mobile® 6.5 will also include free access to Microsoft’s My Phone service where customers can perform automatic backups of photos, music, contacts and text messages from their handheld to the web for easy access any time.

The LG Versa VX9600 is the touch-screen phone for people who hate touch screens. With a unique detachable QWERTY keyboard, it easily swings between key-tapping and touch-screen-only modes. The Versa is a terrific texting phone, but the software's rough edges prevent it from being an all-around winner.

Verizon Wireless and LG Electronics announced today that the LG VX9600 Versa will launch next week on the Verizon network. The touchscreen phone features an attachable QWERTY keyboard to help users write e-mails and messages, or they can choose to leave the keypad at home to reduce the overall size of the device.

The Versa's 2MP camera promises a lot, with face detection and a feature called SmartPic, which claims to reduce noise and improve low-light performance. Picture quality was sharp if sometimes overexposed in the bright areas. Low-light photos didn't look too bad, and didn't show too much blur, while daylight photos showed a bit of visible compression artifacting. As far as we could tell, SmartPic didn't help much. The camera's autofocus is terribly slow, causing a 2.1-second shutter delay, which drops to a more reasonable 0.6-second delay if you turn autofocus off. The 640-by-480 movie-recording mode produces footage that, at 14 frames per second (fps), looked a bit jerky and compressed in testing; the 320-by-240 movie mode, at 20 fps, looked better.

The Versa's 3-inch touchscreen with tactile feedback features an animated OS with a 3D interface and customizable home screens. The phone's accelerometer rotates the screen between portrait and landscape modes, and can be used to control games. The Versa's Web browser supports Flash, RSS, and tabbed browsing. Users can snap pictures and video with the Versa's 2 megapixel camera, which can save the multimedia to the phone's microSD card slot.

The Verizon LG Versa will be available March 1 for $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a two-year service agreement.

The display on the device has remained unchanged and is still a 3″ display with capacitive touch. The quality of the display is good but the sunlight visibility isn’t the best we have seen. The display’s brightness can be adjusted but not he contrast. The resolution is on the lower side and does affect the picture quality. However, the touch works beautifully and there were no hiccups in that regard.

The keyboard has a nice neat layout with sufficient gap between two adjacent keys. The keys are slightly raised from bottom and give enough tactile feedback. The top row keys suffer due to close proximity to top edge. The mode automatically changes to landscape when the keyboard is flipped out. The lighting on the keyboard is adequate for low light conditions. Overall the QWERTY keyboard does a good job, better than Sony Xperia X1.

The user-interface on the device is Flash based developed by LG. The same user interface has been previously used in the older Prada, Viewty etc. The biggest change however comes in te form of multi-touch support which was till now exclusive to the Apple iPhone. The interface has got a performance boost and responds much faster. The menu has fixed layout and the accelerometer changes the orientation but only in selected applications. There are multiple home screens pretty much like the iPhone and you can select the application shortcuts to put on them. The rest of the interface is mostly unchanged and we like the way it is.

The music player on the device is good with extensive search options based on artist, genre, album etc. The music player however does not support visualisations but have support for album art. The home screen gets a dedicated widget when the music player is running. The player gets equalizers which were missing in previous versions but still there is no custom equalizer option though.

The camera has a 5 megapixel sensor and Schneider-Kreuznac lens a big improvement over the minuscule 2 megapixel sensor in earlier Prada. The interface is same as LG Renoir which was not much appreciated by us but it has some improvements such a full screen mode that make it better. The image quality of the camera is average which is disappointing. The video recording however completely rocks.

Pros :

  • 3″ capacitive touchscreen
  • Physical QWERTY keyboard
  • Multi-touch support
  • Good video recording
  • Great flash-based interface

Cons :

  • Bulky
  • No GPS
  • Average camera

Final Thoughts

The LG KF900 Prada is definitely an improvement over the earlier Prada with multi-touch support, physical keyboard and higher resolution camera. But it does miss out on GPS and the quality of the camera is average.
